Many people set a goal for themselves of getting their house “clean.” But what does that really mean, and how can you accomplish it? Here is some advice as you embark on your journey toward a cleaner, happier home.


Be Realistic

When you decide to change how you live and start cleaning up your home, it’s easy to get caught up in your desires. You want your house completely flawless — no clutter, dirt, dust, or smudges.
Alternately, maybe you set an ambitious timeline for yourself. To make up for all of the times you’ve let your house become messy, you’ll be a cleaning superhero.

It’s good to set cleaning goals, and it’s great to be optimistic and excited. But often, people set goals for cleanliness, or chore frequency, that are overly ambitious. Even if you know your goal is a little impractical, you may still be discouraged when you don’t meet it. And if you’re like many people, you may lose steam, get discouraged, and resume your old habits.

Nobody is perfect, and no home is, either. After all, you live in your house, and you expect there will be a certain amount of mess and clutter as you go through the rhythms of life. Sometimes you may have the time and energy to clean more, and sometimes less.

All of this is OK, so long as you maintain a regular chore schedule and stay on top of cleaning. Don’t beat yourself up because your house doesn’t look like a showroom. Remember, doing at least some chores is better than doing none.


Go Easy

Some homeowners think working harder makes them better homeowners. They’ll spend a lot of time cleaning out the garage, guest bedrooms, basements, or other areas that many visitors never see, and they rarely personally spend time in.

Start by prioritizing which rooms in your home need to be the cleanest. You’ll probably concentrate most on central living areas, such as entryways, living and dining rooms, bedrooms, kitchens, and bathrooms.

Storage spaces, basements, attics, and guest rooms don’t see the foot traffic or visitors that other areas of your house do. They don’t get as dirty, and they don’t need frequent cleaning; therefore, space them through your schedule accordingly. By prioritizing and not beating yourself up for not reaching the bottom of the list, you’ll feel much better about your cleaning and be able to clean what really needs it.


Clean Smart

Many homeowners break their backs scrubbing and cleaning, on the grounds that hard work is its own reward. Unfortunately, while everybody enjoys living in a clean home, few actually enjoy, especially if it takes a long time. Your friends and relatives won’t know if you cleaned for half an hour or three hours if the result is the same.

Suffering to keep a clean home just isn’t worth it, and working harder isn’t necessarily working better. If your cleaning is exhausting or time-consuming, you may be doing something wrong.

Be sure to clean frequently enough that you’re not left scrubbing at the deep-seated dirt. Try investing in high-quality cleaning substances or equipment. If you’re not sure about your technique, look up cleaning techniques to see if there’s a more efficient way to do what you’re trying to accomplish.
