Home cleaning service changes name, plans to franchise

BY JERRY SIEBENMARK – THE WICHITA EAGLE – 11/03/2014

Kandi Turner is ready to take the next step in her business.

The owner and founder of 17-year-old residential cleaning service Home Maid has changed the name of the business to Margaret McHenry Maids and will franchise the business, with licensing agreements in place in Kansas City and Dallas. Turner said she also hopes to soon establish a franchise in Tulsa.

She said her company, based at 528 N. Washington, has 35 full-time employees and a fleet of 12 service vehicles. Its cleaning staff is uniformed, bonded and insured, she said.

Along with the name change and franchising, Turner will expand the cleaning services her company offers to homeowners to include concierge services, such as leather conditioning, silver polishing and errand services such as picking up dry cleaning and walking pets.

Turner’s idea to franchise came a year ago, she said, when one of her longtime clients was relocating to Kansas City and asked if she thought about franchising the business.

She contacted her attorney at Foulston Seifkin who put her in touch with Pat Neville, former CEO of the Beauty First franchise and now a consultant with Paradigm Advisory Group in Dallas.

“I think the model could play very well in many, many markets,” Neville said.

Turner said she changed the name of the company because Home Maid was trademarked by someone outside the Wichita market.

Turner, who grew up in the Wichita area, said she started cleaning houses part time while living in Lawrence and attending Johnson County Community College.

She moved back to Wichita and started Home Maid in 1997 as its sole employee.
